When to Seek Extra Help
Early support prevents small problems becoming big ones. Here’s how to decide what you need — and who to contact in the UK.
Start with your vet
- Behaviour changes can be medical (pain, infection, thyroid, GI issues).
- Rule out health causes before training plans — it saves time and stress.
Trainers vs. Behaviourists
- Qualified trainers (e.g., IMDT/APDT) help with life skills: recall, loose-lead, manners, confidence.
- Clinical/Accredited behaviourists (e.g., ABTC/CCAB) tackle complex issues: aggression, phobias, separation anxiety, severe reactivity — usually via vet referral.
What “good practice” looks like
- Welfare-first, positive reinforcement methods only.
- Written plans, kindness, and pacing to your dog’s stress threshold.
- Willingness to collaborate with your vet.
