Rehome With Reason

A campaign encouraging kinder, safer and more responsible decisions whenever a dog needs a new home.

Every year, thousands of dogs are rehomed during difficult life circumstances. Some journeys are carefully planned, but many happen under pressure, through panic or with little support available.

Rehome With Reason is HomeWagger’s commitment to changing that.

We believe every dog deserves a welfare-first journey — one that gives owners the opportunity to explore their options, helps adopters make informed decisions and supports organisations working to achieve the best possible outcomes.

We believe rehoming should never feel like buying or selling. It should be a thoughtful process built on compassion, transparency and responsibility.

Because finding the right home matters far more than finding the quickest home.

Why this campaign matters

Rehoming a dog is one of the biggest decisions an owner can face. Yet too often, people are left to navigate it alone, under pressure or without clear guidance.

When support is difficult to find, decisions can become rushed. Dogs may be advertised on marketplace-style platforms, handed over through social media or passed between people with few safeguards in place.

Rehome With Reason exists to encourage a different approach—one that gives people the opportunity to slow down, explore their options and put each dog’s long-term welfare first.

Rehome With Reason isn’t about telling people whether they should rehome.

It’s about helping them make the right decision, for the right reasons, in the right way.

We believe every rehoming journey should be built on compassion, transparency and thoughtful decision-making, because finding the right home is always more important than finding the quickest home.

💙 Support

Encourage people to explore practical support and available options before rehoming becomes the only path forward.

🛡 Welfare

Put every dog’s long-term wellbeing ahead of convenience, speed or popularity.

🤝 Responsibility

Promote thoughtful matching, honest communication and ethical rehoming that benefits both people and dogs.

Why rushed rehoming can put dogs at risk

Most people who need to rehome a dog are doing their best during an already difficult time. Unfortunately, when there is little guidance or support available, it’s easy for the process to become rushed.

Quick decisions, limited information and informal arrangements can increase the risk of poor matches and make it harder to protect everyone involved—especially the dog.

That’s why the Rehome With Reason campaign encourages a slower, welfare-first approach that helps people make informed decisions.

  • Taking time to find the right home rather than the quickest one.
  • Helping adopters understand a dog’s needs before committing.
  • Encouraging honest conversations and realistic expectations.
  • Supporting safer introductions and more structured handovers.
  • Reducing the likelihood of failed placements and repeated rehoming.
  • Helping protect the long-term welfare of both dogs and people.

Who is Rehome With Reason for?

🏠 Dog Owners

If you’re considering rehoming your dog, the campaign encourages you to slow down, explore your options and make thoughtful, welfare-first decisions without shame or pressure.

🐾 Adopters

Responsible adoption is about more than finding an available dog. We encourage adopters to focus on compatibility, commitment and giving every dog the right home for life.

🏥 Shelters & Rescues

Shelters and rescues play a vital role in promoting ethical rehoming. Together, we can create clearer pathways, better support for owners and safer outcomes for dogs.

What the pledge stands for

The Rehome With Reason pledge is a shared commitment to making dog rehoming safer, kinder and more responsible.

It asks people, adopters, shelters and organisations to support a welfare-first approach built around:

  • Support before rehoming — exploring realistic options before a dog is moved.
  • No selling or profit-driven rehoming — dogs are family members, not items to list.
  • Honest, transparent communication — sharing a dog’s needs clearly and without shame.
  • Thoughtful matching — focusing on suitability, lifestyle, commitment and long-term welfare.
  • Calm, structured handovers — avoiding rushed meet-ups, pressure and unclear arrangements.
  • Compassion for owners — recognising that many rehoming situations begin with crisis, grief or overwhelm.

If you believe rehoming should be guided by care, honesty and welfare — not panic, shame or speed — you can support the campaign by signing the pledge.

Has adopting a dog been more difficult than you expected?

Perhaps you’ve applied several times without success. Maybe you’ve been told you weren’t suitable, or found the process confusing, inconsistent or difficult to understand.

Every organisation has a responsibility to make careful welfare decisions, but we also believe there is value in listening to the experiences of adopters. Understanding what works well—and where people struggle—can help improve the rehoming journey for everyone.

If you’d like to share your experience, we’d love to hear from you. Your feedback will help inform the ongoing development of HomeWagger and the Rehome With Reason campaign.

About HomeWagger CIC

HomeWagger CIC is a UK Community Interest Company working to improve outcomes for people and dogs through welfare-first support, education and responsible rehoming.

We believe that every dog deserves the right outcome—not simply the quickest one. That’s why we’re building practical guidance, trusted partnerships and ethical pathways that help people make informed decisions during some of life’s most difficult moments.

Our role isn’t to judge people for needing to rehome. It’s to encourage safer decisions, support responsible adoption and promote better outcomes for dogs, owners, adopters and the organisations that care for them.

Supporting people. Protecting dogs. That’s the future we’re working towards.

Every better rehoming journey starts with one decision.

A decision to slow down.

A decision to put welfare before urgency.

A decision to Rehome With Reason.
