When to Seek Extra Help

Early support prevents small problems becoming big ones. Here’s how to decide what you need — and who to contact in the UK.

Start with your vet

  • Behaviour changes can be medical (pain, infection, thyroid, GI issues).
  • Rule out health causes before training plans — it saves time and stress.

Trainers vs. Behaviourists

  • Qualified trainers (e.g., IMDT/APDT) help with life skills: recall, loose-lead, manners, confidence.
  • Clinical/Accredited behaviourists (e.g., ABTC/CCAB) tackle complex issues: aggression, phobias, separation anxiety, severe reactivity — usually via vet referral.

What “good practice” looks like

  • Welfare-first, positive reinforcement methods only.
  • Written plans, kindness, and pacing to your dog’s stress threshold.
  • Willingness to collaborate with your vet.
